Curro pupil releases statement after 'satanic' artwork causes furore

A Curro learner’s artwork has upset Christians on social media after their year-end art submission was seen to be disrespectful to the religion.

A KwaZulu-Natal learner’s artwork has upset Christians on social media. The leaner's artwork has been described as disrespectful to Christianity.

A video made by an upset parent of a matric pupil at Grantleigh School has been widely spread on social media and caused a massive backlash. Grantleigh School - situated on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast - is an independent school and a member of the Curro Group.

The artwork featured is part of a final submission to the Independent Examination Board (IEB) and was displayed in the school foyer as part of a year-end exhibition.

In the video, the parent states that the artwork was a "disgrace" and it "broke his heart" that the school allowed this display. 

Andrew Norris, the Grantleigh Executive Head, has since released an official statement on the school's website:

'We have taken cognisance of the allegations made on social media; the matter is currently subject to and internal investigation. We want to reiterate that comments made is not an accurate reflection of our school and the situation referred to and we reserve our rights in this regard. Curro welcomes all comments that are constructive and contribute to discussions in a meaningful manner. However, we do not condone cyber-bullying, religious intolerance, hate speech, derogatory language, misrepresentation and comments reflecting negatively on our brand on any social media pages,' he wrote.

The Curro learner has released a personal statement of his own to the media. 

"It has come to my attention that a non-consensual recording of my matric art exhibition has been leaked and gone viral on social media," the pupil said.
