City of Joburg proposes extra R50 levy for wealthier families
If you’re thinking the waste levy you’re currently paying is steep, things might just get a little bit more expensive...
The City of Johannesburg has proposed the initiation of an extra R50 levy. The “recycling levy” will form part of the changes in tariffs for the period between 2021 and 2022.
It will apply to the “rich households” in Johannesburg.
How do you know if you’ll be paying the extra levy? Properties with a market value of over R350,000 will be charged R50 extra a month.

Recycling can benefit a community and the environment as a whole, as the collecting and processing of materials can be turned into new materials.
Journalist Ferial Haffajee said: “City stealth taxes are growing like R200/levy on prepaid meters and R50/recycling levy on properties valued at over R350 000,00 – draft Jozi budget says this is because national government grants are flat-lining.”

Pikitup, the official integrated waste management service provider to the City of Joburg, will provide necessary plastic bags for recycling purposes. One black bag for general waste and one bag for recyclable garbage.
