Boxing champion Francois van Coke releases new song ‘Ons Het Gewen’
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
2021 will be remembered as the year Francois van Coke got in the ring to face retired Springbok rugby player Derick Hougaard in a BOXOP boxing match.
It was a headbang of a different kind when after six nail-biting, action-packed rounds, Francois took the title home to Bellville. The fight took place at Sun Arena on 29th May and was live streamed and broadcast in Nu Metro theatres, as well.
Francois van Coke visited Breakfast with Martin Bester a few weeks before the match and explained his gruelling training schedule to prepare for the boxing match of the year!
During Francois’ training for the BOXOP match, he felt inspired to write a victory song and was inspired by the anthemic sounds of 'We Are The Champions' by Queen.

Francois teamed up with Hunter Kennedy and Fred den Hartog to start writing.
“I wanted to use the words ‘Ons wen’ (We win) and ‘Ons is lewendig’ (We are alive), because while boxing motivated me, getting through the COVID-19 era together as homo sapiens inspired me."
The song was finished five weeks before Francois’ BOXOP victory. He explains that “because the song is called 'Ons het gewen', it forced me to work even harder to prepare for the fight. Music and boxing melting together – crazy times indeed! But Rock ‘n’ roll will always triumph.”
