Well known boxing trainer Nick Durandt has died in a motorcycle accident near Clarens in the Free State.
Police spokesperson Captain Zweli Mohobeleli says a motorbike and a kombi were involved in the accident.
"The accident happened just after 14:00 on the R712 between Clarens and Bethlehem."
Durandt, who quit full-time training last year to focus on other business interests trained a string of world champions and top fighters during his time as a trainer and handed his boxing gym business over to his son Damien.
Durandt was a massive biking enthusiast and also the President of the Crusaders Bike Club.
It is understood he collided with a vehicle on the road between Bethlehem and Clarens on Friday afternoon.
His son Damien says he was with him in hospital in Bethlehem when he died.
Boxing expert Ron Jackson says it's a sad day for South African boxing.
Tributes are continuing to pour in from a shocked boxing community.
Boxing expert Clinton van der Berg says the often controversial and outspoken Durandt will not only be remembered as one of the country's best boxing trainers but for his flamboyant personality.
One time adversary in his capacity as a trainer, former world champion Brian Mitchell, now a boxing commentator and publicist, says Durandt was without a doubt, one of the best boxing trainers that this country has ever produced.
Mitchell recalls how he and Durandt went head to head as trainers when Mitchell's charge at the time, Cassius Baloyi, fought another of Durandt's champions Phillip Ndou.
