South Africa thrills in Netball World Cup opener
South Africa had the crowd on their feet when they beat
Wales 61 – 50 in the opening game of the Netball World Cup at the Cape Town
International Convention Centre on Friday evening.
Wales were not only up against a fired-up Proteas team, but they also had to contend with the deafening support from the home crowd who cheered and danced through out the 60-minute game.
The Proteas team is one of the most experienced at the World Cup in terms of international caps.
Coach Norma Plummer said she believes the Proteas can do better.
“It was a win, not what I necessarily would call a convincing win. I thought our first quarter was sensational but then the Welsh notched it up in the second and third quarters. We started spraying balls and that was disappointing. There’s a lot of information that we now have and that we can use and work on.”
The Proteas take on Sri Lanka today and on Sunday they face Jamaica.
This after Jamaica showed their might against Sri Lanka on Friday night, with a convincing 105 – 25 win.
In other games on Friday night, England beat Barbados 90 – 29.
Malawi beat Scotland 55 – 49.
