The South African businessman delivered his election pitch to the 207 FIFA delegates in Zurich within the allocated 15 minute timeframe and then dropped a bombshell right at the end of his presentation by declaring that he was no longer part of the race.
"I reflect the views of my country as a candidate of reconciliation. You don't have to elect me as president. I've got a surprise for you...my campaign ends today and I suspend my participation. Tokyo Sexwale will not go further to cause a division. It is not the right moment to start a fire in your own house," Sexwale said.
Sexwale conceded in his speech that FIFA was in need of drastic reform and expressed his sympathy with those officials who had fallen in the wake of a massive graft into corruption and mismanagement.
"Nelson Mandela taught us: Never rejoice in the pain and misery of others," he said.
Sexwale was Africa's only candidate in the race for the most powerful position in world soccer.
He declared that he is ready to serve the new president before leaving the stage to a standing ovation from shocked delegates.
