Details are sketchy at the moment but it's understood that the 84-year-old died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Mcintosh coached the Sharks to their first Currie Cup title in 1990 and won a further three Currie Cup trophies with the union in the 90s.

He also coached the Springboks from 1993 to 1994.

Former Springbok captain and CEO of the SA Rugby Legends John Smit says McIntosh was a legend.

"He was such an inspiration to everyone who worked underneath him. It is one thing to be a good coach and another to remain friends and a father figure to all of those you coached for so many years.

"He was busy until the day he died. He played goal, he coached, he was a massive part of the Cell C SA Rugby Legends giving back to the game that gave him so much and he gave us all so much."
