Covid-19 claims Banyana friendly against Netherlands
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Banyana Banyana's trip to the Netherlands for a friendly international has been called after five South African players tested positive for Covid-19.
The team was scheduled to fly to Europe on Monday to play a friendly game with the Dutch in Zwolle.
Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says the health of the players will always come first.
“This is a difficult time, where we are, in the middle of the third wave in our country. Unfortunately Banyana Banyana has not been spared.
"Due to positive cases in our camp, the full delegation has been put into isolation and we will therefore not be able to honour the friendly fixture against the Netherlands.
“At this moment, of utmost importance is the health of everyone, both us and our opponents, and football takes second place.’’
The team was expected to play the hosts on 3 July as part of their preparations for the Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for later this year.
