Bafana Bafana coach Broos under fire for PSL remarks

Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth believes the recent criticism of the standard of South African football by national team coach Hugo Broos could have far-reaching consequences.

Booth was reacting to comments by Broos that South African football doesn’t have quality players that can compete against the best around the globe.

Broos made the remarks after Bafana Bafana lost their opening game in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to Morocco last Thursday.

“Now is the time to face the real problem and the real problem of SA is that we don’t have high quality players,” Broos said.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM’s Breakfast with Martin Bester during a live broadcast from Discovery Park Soccer Club in Parkmore on Wednesday, Booth said Broos needs to be careful.

“Everything was hunky-dory until we lost and now excuses are coming out. He does have a point but as a foreigner earning a salary from the local football stakeholders, I’d be very careful of what I say.

“If I was one of his players at the moment, I wouldn’t be full of confident.”
