Rails used to transport workers underground at Thembelani shaft collapsed on Tuesday evening, leaving 1 800 miners trapped underground.

Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson James Wellsted said that an inspection first needed to be done before the miners could be brought to the surface.

“We concluded the shaft inspection at Thembelani at about 19:00 last night. The shaft inspection proved that there was no significant damage.

“We were able to hoist all employees safely to the surface by about 22:30.”

Sibanye-Stillwater will now be doing further inspections of the shaft to make sure there are no further issues, before deciding on the way forward.
