We are not here for corruption, says Malema as ANC Ekurhuleni wants out
EFF leader Julius Malema has warned the ANC in Ekurhuleni that his party will not turn a blind eye to any form of corruption by members of the governing party.
Malema's remarks come after the governing party's acting regional chairperson Jongizizwe Dlabathi wrote a letter to ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, asking for a re-evaluation of its relationship with the EFF.
The two parties have five mayoral committee posts each in Ekurhuleni, which were appointed following the election of African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor Sivuyile Ngodwana as mayor in April.
This was said to be a test to see if the two parties could work together after the 2024 national elections.
But the ANC and EFF have already been involved in a public spat over missing waste collection trucks in Ekurhuleni.
At the same time, Malema has denied that his party has signed any form of coalition agreement with the ANC, arguing that they have no relationship but vote together on service delivery matters or for candidates they believe in.
Addressing party members at Uncle Tom's Community Hall in Soweto on Thursday, Malema said the EFF is simply doing what they promised the people, which is the delivery of services.
"They thought the EFF was an organisation of small boys, who are going to get into Ekurhuleni, they will manipulate them, they will control them, they will get them into corruption.
“The EFF said hell no, we are not here for corruption, we are here for service delivery, we are here to make Ekurhuleni work, we are here to make sure that that which was promised to black people gets delivered.
"We are in charge now, they shall not be any township that is dirty under the EFF, in Ekurhuleni, in Mogale City, in Johannesburg, we want to restore the dignity of black people.
Malema said the EFF remains puzzled at the DA’s attitude towards them.
"The DA says we will never work with the EFF, we don't want the EFF in the moon-pact, not that we want to go to the moon, we just want to know - what have we done?
“Our crime, they say if the EFF gets into government, it will do what it promised to do. They do not care about delivering to people, they pretend to be wanting to deliver, but they don't deliver at all.
“The EFF delivers, especially here in Gauteng.
“The unity of our leadership is going to be tested now more than ever before. Let the unity of the EFF be tested in power, but I can tell you, for as long as I am president, there is no room for nonsense," warned Malema.
