The by-election is taking place in all the 12 wards in the Limpopo mining town.

Over 400 candidates from 21 political parties, including five independent candidates, are contesting the 24 council seats.

The troubled municipality was placed under administration in September following years of instability since the 2021 elections.

The IEC briefed the media on Wednesday in Thabazimbi.

Limpopo IEC Chairperson Nkaro Mateta said vote counting will start at 9 pm after cut-off time.

"After the counting process, the commission will allocate the seats. For the allocation of seats, we will apply proportional representation for the local council and majoritarian ‘winner takes all’ for the wards.

"Parties and independents can raise objections to any alleged irregularities, both during voting and counting with presiding officers at affected voting stations, and until 5 pm on Friday.

The IEC has established a mini-Results Operations Centre at the Thabazimbi Bioskop Hall to manage the polls.
