Spokesperson Sputnik Ratu says due to the consistent rainfall the Vaal Dam has passed 100% capacity.

“This is due to the fact that there is a lot of rain in the catchments within the Integrated Vaal River System and therefore these have added a lot of inflows in to the dams.

“For example the Vaal dam, which has 107% of capacity and is still having inflows. Therefore in order to manage the infrastructure and inflows we will be opening one sluice gate and monitoring on a continuous basis if there will be a need to open more.”

Ratau warned people living downstream to be cautious.

“People that are downstream of the dam are encouraged to move their equipment out of the way as well as to ensure no one will be along the water way as there will be a lot of water coming through.”

He added that no one should cross low-lying bridges over the next few days due to possible localised flooding.
