Two children killed in Hillbrow building fire

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has confirmed the deaths of two children following a fire at a residential building in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon.
The minors aged 5 and 7 were burnt beyond recognition.
Spokesperson, Xolile Khumalo says the kids were locked in an apartment when the fire broke out.
"At around 14:38 EMS Firefighters responded to a structural fire incident at Florence Nightingale Flats in Hillbrow, the fire started on the first floor, where 2 rooms caught fire and escalated to the 2nd floor. No other injuries were reported" said Khumalo.
"The City of Johannesburg, EMS urges the residents to be extra cautious when using candles, various lighting sources and electrical appliances. They are also urged not to leave these lighting sources, and appliances unattended."
"Electrical appliances are to be switched off during loadshedding to avoid fire incidents." she added.
Khumalo says the cause of the fire is unknown.
