Tributes pour in for ‘cultural icon’ Chweneyagae
Acting North West Premier Kenetswe Mosenogi has lauded late award-winning thespian Presley Chweneyagae as more than just an actor, but South Africa’s cultural icon.
Mosenogi joins the chorus of tributes for the Mahikeng-born actor, who died on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old shot to fame following his memorable performance in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, alongside another North Westerner, Zenzo Ngqobe.
“He honed his craft at Mmabana Mahikeng, where his passion for performance flourished. His remarkable performances in acclaimed works such as ‘Tsotsi’, for which he received an Academy Award, and his unforgettable role in ‘The River’, showcased his extraordinary talent and dedication to his craft,” Mosenogi said.
In a statement, the acting premier described Chweneyagae’s death as a tragic loss that would leave a void in the hearts of those in the industry he loved.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of creativity and passion he gifted to us all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,” she added.
The North West Provincial Government says it will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a dignified send-off for the actor and support his family.
Meanwhile, his co-star in Tsotsi, Terry Pheto, took to her Instagram to express her sadness over the news.
Political parties and industry peers have also published their messages of condolences on social media.
Speaking to the SABC from Pretoria, his family said they would wait until all family members had met before making an official announcement with more details.
