Three arrested for R54 million drug bust

The Hawks have seized drugs worth R54 million in the Free State and Gauteng on Friday.
The investigative unit says three suspects between the ages of 31 and 54-years-old were arrested in the two provinces
Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase, says the drugs were confiscated in Welkom, Free State and Mayfield Park in Johannesburg.
"The suspects were monitored over a period of time by the Hawks and Crime Intelligence team as they allegedly sold a consignment of drugs on several occasions to a police agent," says Nkwalase.
"The search and seizure operation started in Welkom where two suspects were arrested.
"This came after the team found 11 packets of mandrax with an estimated street value of R900 000 concealed inside their vehicle."
Nkwalase adds the police proceeded to Mayfield Park, Johannesburg in Gauteng.
"Upon searching, police uncovered 910 000 mandrax tablets, 3 kg of crystal meth, a large amount of chemicals valued over R400 000 and one suspect was arrested," he says.
"The assortment of drugs that were found in Mayfield Park has an estimated street value of R54 Million.
"Four vehicles were also seized which include a VW Polo, Ford Ranger double cab, VW GTI and Isuzu as well as an undisclosed amount of money."
The three suspects are expected to make their first court appearances in their respective provinces on Monday.
