SAPS to be investigated for distributing personal information of Krugersdorp rape victims

The Regulator believes that some SAPS members may have violated the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). 

Spokesperson, Nomzamo Zondi Nzondi says the Regulator is aware of a list that is being distributed which contains the personal information of the rape victims. 

“The Regulator will conduct an own-initiative assessment as per section 89 of POPIA into the measures put in place by SAPS to safeguard the personal information of the victims in this case,” says Nzondi.

The assessment will establish the circumstances of the leak and the measures that the SAPS had put in place to protect the personal information of the victims.

“The Regulator has also been informed that this information is being shared publicly across various media platforms.”

The Regulator’s Alison Tilley has also pleaded with the public to stop sharing the list. 

 “If you have it, delete it. The list was released publicly in violation of POPIA,” says Tilley.
