Santaco: Gauteng taxi fares to increase by maximum of R7
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in Gauteng has announced the increased taxi fares which will come into effect on July 1.

The price hikes come amid complaints from the industry of it being under financial strain due to the lockdown regulations and reduced capacity.

The Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) had previously agreed to scrap their 172% taxi fare increase following meetings with provincial government.
Santaco announced last week that taxi fare increases would be fair to both commuters and taxi drivers.
Santaco’s provincial chairperson Mkhonza says Gauteng taxi fares will increase by a maximum of R7.
"This increase is our annual increase and again this increase we have negotiated with some of our associations and some of our regional leadership and we have come to an agreement that this increase from R4 to R5 and up to a maximum of R7 will be sufficient.
"We have also checked the operational cost of these vehicles as well as the parts and fuel and also we looked at other issue and they really convinced us that this increase will be enough for our association."
Cross-provincial taxi trips are expected to increase by R50 per person.
