The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says it is concerned at the lack of uniformity in dealing with Covid-19 cases at schools.

Over 500 teachers and 100 pupils have tested positive in Western Cape school, with several schools in Gauteng temporarily closed due to coronavirus outbreaks.

Sadtu general-secretary Mungwena Maluleka claims some schools have remained open despite having confirmed cases.
“We have received some concerns raised by our members and then the management of the schools in terms of lack of uniformity, how the cases are being treated and in some schools the schools are closed… and in certain schools they have refused to close in order decontaminate.
“If these issues are not addressed, we will not be able to establish a tracking system which is required by the World Health Organisation as well as a regulation that if there is a positive case there must be some tracking.”
