Saccawu considering indefinite wage strike at Massmart
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
Workers affiliated to the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) has given Massmart seven days to table an improved wage offer.

Failing this, workers will embark on an indefinite strike at the company, which includes Game and Builders Warehouse.
The union handed Massmart a memorandum of demands on Saturday, following a three-day strike at their 22 stores across the country.
Saccawu has been in a months-long wage dispute with Massmart.
The union’s spokesperson Sithembele Tshwete said they are demanding a wage increase of 12% or R900 for all its members.
Massmart is only offering a 4.5% increase, a rate workers believe is too far below the current inflation level.
“The workers minimum salary is 1100 therefore we are asking for an increase of R900 not R300 because it’s far below the minimum wage.
“They have not moved or change their offer, but we have given them a memorandum on Friday to consider and revert in seven days on our demands.
“Thereafter we are going on an indefinite strike and will urge customers not to buy from Massmart stores because we cannot tolerate earnings of a R1000 in a month - having to travel to and from work then buy food is impossible with such a salary.”
