The Restaurant Association of South Africa says the continuous rolling blackouts are just another setback for the struggling sector.
Eskom implemented a stage 4 load shedding on Monday afternoon. It is expected to last until at least Friday.
The association’s Wendy Alberts says the sector was one of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 lockdown.
“We are extremely affected by the current load shedding. We have no idea when it will be completed, and this is putting a massive pressure on our restaurants and the impact is paramount. We are recovering from the lockdown, and we now have to deal with further challenges.”
Alberts says the using of diesel generators is not always viable and landlords should ensure the provision of electricity and water supply to their clients.
“Some portions of our membership have generators but is not always viable, we have called on landlords to provide alternative energy supply as per the leases. But also, implications of generators are environment noise, cost to run it and health risk due to the storage of the back-up fuel.”
