Power in Alex to be restored this evening
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
City Power says residents of Alexandra should have electricity again on Wednesday evening following Sunday’s explosion at the Vasco da Gama switching substation.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says criminals gained entry to the station on Sunday in an attempt to steal copper cables.
“The fire left five distributors off, affecting power supply to areas from 2nd to 18th Avenue, between Vasco and Hofmeyr.”
Mangena says technicians have been working since Sunday to restore power.

“A team was already halfway with the repairs on Tuesday, with new infrastructure brought in to replace the burnt out structures.
“We expect the work to be completed by Wednesday evening after which power will be restored.”
This is the fourth time this year that the Vasco da Gama switching substation has exploded as a result of cable theft and vandalism.
