Possible legal action over de-accreditation of Walter Sisulu University LLB degree

The Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN) says it might take legal action against the Council on Higher Education for de-accrediting the Walter Sisulu University's (WSU)s LLB degree.

The decision by the CHE follows a review of the Bachelor of Law degree prgorammes at the 17 universities that offer it.

"Those programmes with serious shortcomings were immediately placed on notice of withdrawal and also given a specified time period within which to implement the short term remedies, failing which accreditation would be withdrawn as the next step," the CHE announced in November.

Now, the HETN says it has already sent a letter of demands to the CHE.

"Should we not receive anything from them we then would have no choice but to take legal action," says the HETN's Sibongile Malinga.

But she explains they have also sent another request to have a meeting.

The university has meanwhile reportedly indicated it will do all it can to be re-accredited.
