Official recused from Marshalltown fire enquiry
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
One of the presiding commissioners in the Commission of Inquiry into the Marshalltown fire has been recused.

Advocate Thulani Makhubela was removed from the panel on Wednesday after it emerged that he showed support to xenophobic posts on social media.
The fire at the Usindiso building in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) in August 2023 claimed the lives of 77.
Makhubela allegedly showed support to anti-immigrant groups such as Operation Dudula and Put South Africa First
Chairperson of the inquiry, retired Constitutional Court Justice Sisi Khampepe, said Makhubela’s support and dissemination of anti-foreign rhetoric showed that he would not bring an impartiality to the inquiry.
"Having regard a foregoing, I am satisfied that a case has been made out for the recusal of commissioner Makhubela. In the premises I ruled that commissioner Makhubela is recused as a Commissioner of the Commission,"
The Commission is expected to conclude its work in April 2023.
