"The relief amount is set at R2200 using the rationale of the Expanded Public Works Programme, the EPWD rate structure. The department has taken into consideration the commitments for the unpaid beneficiaries in the first phase, which is estimated at R4 million."

The department has allocated R77 million for the second phase, with R11 million ringfenced for a partnership with Small Business Development.

"We received close to 1000 e-mails late. Over 4000 applications were recommended for relief by the adjudicators and, just over 1000 were not recommended.”

Applicants who did not meet the criteria are encouraged to make use of the appeals process.

Mthethwa said an economic recovery plan, in partnership with the Department of Small Business Development, will be set up for the sector during the next phase.
