Matlala attempted murder case postponed to August

The attempted murder case against controversial businessman Vusi “Cat” Matlala has been postponed to August 26, following a brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Matlala, currently facing three counts of attempted murder, appeared in court under heavy police guard and wearing leg irons.
His defence team requested access to portions of data retrieved from his cell phone, arguing they are entitled to specific information held by the state.
The magistrate granted the postponement to allow time for the disclosure process.
The charges relate to a drive-by shooting in Sandton in October 2023, in which Matlala’s ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane, was allegedly targeted.
While Thobejane was unharmed, a friend who was with her at the time sustained serious injuries and spent more than a month in the hospital.
Also appearing in court was Matlala’s wife, Tsakani Matlala, who is an accused in the case.
She has been out on bail since a previous court appearance. The couple, along with two co-accused, are alleged to have conspired in the failed hit.
Matlala’s court appearance comes in the wake of his name surfacing in explosive political allegations.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi recently linked Matlala to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in claims of political interference in criminal investigations, further intensifying public interest in the case.
The matter will return to court in August, with the defence expected to challenge aspects of the state’s evidence.
