Joburg, Tshwane to fine political parties for election poste
The cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane will fine political parties R500 and R1,000, respectively, for each unremoved poster put up before the May 29 general elections.
The two metros say all posters must be removed within 14 days of the polls, giving political parties until Wednesday to remove the posters.
Joburg’s spokesperson Virgil James said the posters were posted under the provision of Section 28 of the City of Johannesburg’s Outdoor Advertising By-law.
“Amongst other conditions, it is stated that any poster must be removed by the person displaying it within 14 days after the conclusion of the elections.
“Failing which, the council shall, within 14 days of the conclusion of the election, notify the relevant party to remove the poster within a time period specified.”
Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane by-laws indicate that political parties will face a maximum fine of R20,000 or 28 days imprisonment.
"In the case of a continuing offence, to a fine of R1,000 for every day such offence continues after written notice has been issued by the Municipality requiring discontinuation of such offence, and for a second or subsequent offence he/she shall be liable, on conviction, to a maximum fine of R20 000 or 28 days imprisonment.
"The fines and the periods of imprisonment are as set and revised by the Chief Magistrate from time to time."
