Joburg council to elect new mayor

Councillors in the City of Johannesburg will convene an extraordinary council meeting on Tuesday to elect the new mayor following the resignation of Thapelo Ahmad.
The Al Jama-ah councillor tendered his resignation on Monday last week ahead of a planned motion of no-confidence against him.
Amad was elected into office in January following a successful no-confidence motion in the DA's Mpho Phalatse.
DA Gauteng provincial chairperson Fred Nel says the party will nominate Phalatse as their candidate.
"Dr Phalatse has a proven track record and an understanding of the needs of the people of Johannesburg," says Nel.
Meanwhile, ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont says the IFP, the Freedom Front Plus, the ACDP and the UIM will support ActionSA’s Joburg caucus leader Funzi Ngobeni for mayor.
"ActionSA is proud to stand among parties that have proven their unequivocal commitment to providing an alternative to the ANC and EFF in Johannesburg as well as in the 2024 elections.
“These parties have proven that they will not shy away from this commitment and nor will we be selective in terms of when they choose to live up to it.
“Cities like Johannesburg with complex challenges cannot be fixed in the opposition benches and this is why these parties will work together today in Johannesburg and is willing to work with other parties to keep the ANC and EFF out of government," says Beaumont.
The ANC and EFF are yet to announce which candidate they will support.
