IEC warns of job scams ahead of 2024 elections
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The Independent Electoral Commission has warned job seekers to be vigilant when applying for work online.
It says there has been a surge in fraudsters taking advantage of the IEC’s recruitment in the run-up to the 2024 national and provincial elections.
The IEC says the scammers are posing as representatives of the organisation to draw out personal information from unsuspecting job seekers.
“Scammers are using fake job postings to take advantage of unsuspecting applicants. No sooner have we had one site shut down, than we receive reports of others,” said IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo.
“I wish to stress that the Electoral Commission advertises its job opportunities only on its official social media channels – Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, and on its recruitment portal on the official website – www.elections.org.za”.
“Any post, message or website that asks you to fill in your personal details as part of an application process, or directs you to any other website is a potential phishing site.”
