HAITU files for leave to appeal administration ruling
The Health and Allied Workers Indaba Trade Union will apply for leave to appeal a Labour Court order granting the Department of Labour the right to place it under administration.
The union, representing around 20 000 health workers, has applied for leave to appeal the decision.
“We view this necessary, as we are the only trade union militant and radical enough to challenge the status quo in health,” said the union’s spokesperson Lerato Mthunzi.
“The appeal grants us the right to continue to operate as normal under the leadership elected at the congress.
“We know that workers are suffering because of the strenuous conditions they are exposed to on a daily basis, and only a revolutionary, fearless union like HAITU, can fight for them and defend their rights.”
The union has vowed to intensify its recruitment campaign to boost the chances of joining the bargaining council by the end of the year.
“HAITU is on the doorstep of being eligible to join the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council, and we do not want to be distracted from the work we need to do,” added Mthunzi.
