Makhura and the provincial command council briefed the media in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Makhura said the province is losing a large number of people to complications from the virus.

"There was a period when the virus was stabilised where we had 60 deaths per week, now we have 433 people per week who succumbed to Covid-19, but this is just a week.

"But if you compare to where we were at the peak of the first wave, we had a period where 200 people succumbed to the virus in one day," said Makhura.

Hospital admissions have also tripled since the start of the year.

Makhura said 1300 Covid-19 patients have been admitted to public hospital, while 2787 are receiving treatment in private facilities.

"We are not at the level where our hospitals are full but the last seven days has given us a sense that our numbers are increasing rapidly.”

Close to 230 patients are on ventilators while 384 are on oxygen, according to Makhura.
