Tau, who has abruptly resigned as a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), served as Tshwane’s MMC for Utility Services and acting mayor.

Mashaba says Tau will sign up as an ordinary member of the party.

“When I announced the formation of our new party, I made a few things clear. We do not want to be a home for politicians who have failed our residents and any politician joining us would need to pass through the proverbial eye of the needle.

"What is clear is that Abel does not seek positions within the party and will sign up as an ordinary member."

Tau is not the first politician to join Mashaba’s new party, with former African National Congress (ANC) MP Vytjie Mentor also joining the former Johannesburg mayor.

There are also reports that another former ANC MP, Makhosi Khoza, would be joining The People’s Dialogue.

Mashaba is expected to officially launch the new party at the end of August.
