The head of South Africa’s national disaster management centre Mmaphaka Tau has declared flood-stricken KwaZulu-Natal a provincial disaster.
Tau says the decision follows an assessment of the magnitude and severity of the impact of the floods.
The devastating floods have resulted in a loss of life and damage to property, infrastructure and the environment.
The death toll has risen to 306 overnight and the number is expected to rise.

Tau says the provincial disaster would allow all government departments to implement contingency arrangements and ensure that measures are put in place for the province to rebuild.
President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the province on Wednesday and gave an assurance that National Treasury would be approach to provide relief funding.
