Five names on shortlist for Eskom CEO – Makwana
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Eskom chairperson Mpho Makwana says the embattled power utility has shortlisted five candidates for the position of CEO.
The utility has been without a CEO since the departure of Andre de Ruyter in February.
De Ruyter, who was supposed to stay on until April, left the utility abruptly in February following an explosive interview in which he accused a "senior politician" of being involved in corruption at Eskom.
The new CEO will be the utility’s 14th CEO since 1994 and the 11th since load shedding was first implemented in 2007.
“We’ve been quite advanced in the shortlisting process for the next Chief Executive of Eskom, such that we now already have a small shortlist of 5 candidates,” Makwana told the National Demand Side Management Indaba in Muldersdrift on Monday.
Makwana also pointed out that load shedding is not only a South African problem.
“Load shedding is not a uniquely South African problem. There are about seven countries in the world grappling with load shedding, Pakistan has got a supply and demand challenge and is implementing load shedding, and in Australia we see them implementing programmes similar to load shedding.
“So in our country, we have only spoken of switching off geysers and pool pumps, yet global case studies show that some countries are quite advanced technologically and so at some point we also have to advance.”
