FF Plus slams govt's lack of readiness for KZN floods

Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Groenewald has hit out at government's state of readiness in the face of disaster as KZN grapples with devastating floods.
Scores have been displaced as heavy rain washed away infrastructure.
Hundreds are feared dead while rescue teams scramble for missing residents.
It's not the first devasting disaster to hit the province in recent years, including the 2019 floods.
Government officials are on the ground, visiting the hardest-hit communities including Ntuzuma, Umdloti, Clermont, Umzinyathi and Umlazi.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are among officials assessing the extent of the damage.
The army was also deployed to the region.
Groenewald slammed government for being caught on the backfoot, especially in a province prone to flooding.
"Many people already died in KwaZulu-Natal and many more lives will be lost due to the fact that neither the police nor the South African National Defence Force has the capacity to supply effective air support and to ensure that there are rescue missions," Groenewald said on Wednesday.
"The fact of the matter is that it's clear that neither the police and the government and the South African National Defence Force is not prepared for the disaster situation in KwaZulu-Natal and that is a clot on the name of the government and the institutions because KwaZulu-Natal is known for their flood disasters," he added.
The party also called on government to remain vigilant amid threats of looting across the province.
