A 44-year-old father, his 14-year-old son and their dog drowned at a beach in La Mercy in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

Netcare911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said the father and son went fishing in an unprotected area.
A witness saw the pair struggling to swim and contacted Reaction Unit South Africa.
The fisherman says the dog followed in an attempt to rescue the pair but, unfortunately, died.

"Reaction Officers and Medics were dispatched to scene and on arrival found the older male lying on the surf,” says Herbst.
"He was declared deceased on arrival.”
Herbst says an aerial search was conducted to find the son who was seen floating some 100 meters away from where he entered.
"Paramedics from RUSA and Netcare 911 retrieved the body of the teenager.
"He showed no signs of life and was declared deceased."
The incident was also witnessed by the deceased’s other son, who was also swept out but managed to grab onto the rocks and exit the water.
