Elections, BRICS, illegal mining on ANC NEC agenda

African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party's highest decision-making body in between conferences will discuss the election manifesto review, the upcoming BRICS summit, the electricity crisis, and illegal mining this weekend.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) is holding a three-day meeting at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Center in Boksburg from Friday to Monday.
Mbalula says the meeting will prioritise issues affecting South Africans.
"It is expected that the focus will be on priorities for peace and stability, in particular, fighting crime in our country through swift and effective measures,” he says.
The meeting will also review current strategies aimed at promoting economic growth and addressing the high level of unemployment and the rising cost of living.
Additionally, an update will be given on the state's readiness for the upcoming BRICS Political Dialogue Summit and the ANCWL conference.
“We will also give an update on the manifesto implementation review which will form the biggest part of our meeting," says Mbalula.
Mbalula says the Saturday session will focus on preparing for elections and the issues of crime, and water and sanitation will be discussed on Sunday.
"We will also discuss the interventions we think are made and what still needs to be done in dealing with load shedding in our country," he adds.
Mbalula noted that the issue of illicit mining and porous borders will be part of a bigger discussion on related issues.
“We want home affairs as well as the minister of police and the security cluster to deal with this particular matter," he says.
