Twenty-six-year-old Mbuso Maloi handed himself over at the Durban Central Police Station on Wednesday night.
He’s facing is facing charges of theft and public violence.
The Durban Magistrate’s Court heard on Thursday Maloi was aware police had been looking for him since the incident earlier this month when there was looting in Durban and other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The prosecutor told the court Maloi’s family had told police he’d gone to Johannesburg for business and had switched his phone off.
He apparently only cooperated when an application was made for a warrant for his arrest.
The court also heard Maloi possibly used a fake number plate on the day of the alleged looting.
The State said it needed to locate the car.
It also revealed his sister was a witness and would need to be contacted.
Maloi’s lawyer told the court that he made it known that he would accompany his client to the police station when contacted.
He also said the vehicle was currently with Maloi’s father, who could clarify the licence plate question.
This guy happily participated in the looting of Glenwood @WOOLWORTHS_SA and then hopped into a brand new Merc (NUR32896). Anyone recognise him? Will link car vid in next tweet. pic.twitter.com/BvUHD44ACt
