De Ruyter 'one of the best in years' – analyst

Political analyst Theo Venter believes sacking Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter would be a big mistake.
Venter says De Ruyter is one of the best CEO’s the power utility has had in years.
De Ruyter has come under immense pressure amid some of the worst load shedding the country has experienced to date.
On Tuesday, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said a new board will be announced soon.
Some political parties, such as the EFF, and energy expert have been calling for De Ruyter’s head, saying he is unfit to lead the struggling power utility.
But Venter believes De Ruyter is unlikely to follow some of the board members out the door.
“Andre de Ruyter is not an engineer; he is a specialist manager of a large amount of people. He got his training at Sasol which had the same amount of people employed as Eskom, so he knows how to manage people.
“I think De Ruyter, and the Eskom chairperson will stay, because they are good in what they are doing but maybe one or two board members will be removed to add two or four new people.
“This is the simplest thing they can do right now to make it look like they’re doing something about the current energy issue.”
Venter said Eskom needs to focus on deploying energy experts instead of cadre deployment.
“There is a dire need to upgrade the board of Eskom. What is currently needed is less cadre deployment but actual people who know the business such as energy specialist to assist in taking the state-owned entity forward.”
