Hundreds of Democratic Alliance supporters marched through the streets of Pretoria on Tuesday morning to call for the axing of Police Minister Bheki Cele.

The march is led by DA leader John Steenhuisen and the DA's Shadow Minister of Police, Andrew Whitfield, but also by civil society, including the Director of Community Safety at Action Society, Ian Cameron.

The marchers are carrying placards calling for a safer South Africa while walking behind the mobile bill board bearing the message “Minister Cele, nobody is lucky to be raped”.

The message refers to Cele’s comments on the Krugersdorp gang rape in July that sparked public outcry.

The official opposition is also blaming Cele for the “out-of-control crime crisis, desperately under-resourced SAPS and Cele’s personal outbursts that characterise him as grossly incompatible with the high office he holds”.

Protestors are headed to the police minister’s office where they’ll be addressed by party leaders.
