DA demands that Mkhwebane ‘pay back the money’ spent to defend her public image

The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes that suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane should pay back the money her office had spent to defend her public image.

The DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach has written to the acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka to request a full audit on the monies spent by Mkhwebane.

This after the Section 198 parliamentary inquiry heard testimony that Mkhwebane had spent large sums of taxpayer money to defend reports that have been challenged in court.

A campaign to defend her public image following several damning court judgments was also allegedly paid for by taxpayers.

It came at a price tag of R120 000.

"It has become increasingly clear that Mkhwebane, contrary to the very purpose of her office, has no qualms about spending vast swathes of taxpayers' money on failed bids to defend her reports, and bolstering her public image through clandestine media campaigns,” said Breytenbach.

Breytenbach says they will be seeking clarity on the R12 million paid to Seanego Attorneys for advocate Dali Mpofu’s legal assistance.

She spent approximately R4 million defending her controversial CR17 report.

“It should be determined if any of this expenditure was inappropriate, and if so the repayment of these funds should be sought from Mkhwebane."
