The man briefly appeared in court on Tuesday.

Mokete Legodi is accused of the kidnapping and murder of his two-year-old daughter.

He was arrested after the toddler’s body of a toddler was discovered inside the ceiling of his home in Alabama, near Klerksdorp.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Henry Mamothame says the man allegedly went to his girlfriend’s home and took their daughter without her consent.

The mother was in hospital at the time.

“The family members who at the time we're taking care of the child assumed he would bring back the child as he usually did. Upon inquiry, he denied taking the child,” says Mamothame.

“When the mother got discharged from hospital, she went on a search for the baby with the help of family members but they could not find her. The following day, she went to Jouberton Police Station where a case of a missing person was opened.”

Mamothame says the man was arrested after the neigbours noticed a foul smell coming from his home.

The case was postponed to 27 October for further investigations.
