Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Monday that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 34 357 with 705 reported fatalities.

This is a jump of 1674 infections.
Mkhize gave the update in Cape Town where he had oversight visit to the provinces field hospitals.

Mkhize said the reopening of schools is not intended to expose children to infection but that the country cannot be closed forever.
Schools in the Western Cape resumed on Monday, while schools around the country will open on the 8th of June.
"We are saying let's try our best to prevent the spread of infection. It's important to move from the premise that we are going to have this virus for a long time now you can't freeze the whole country forever,” Mkhize said.
"But by so saying we are not just saying let the children get infected and I think it would be a wrong interpretation to put it like that.”
