Cloete Murray ‘assassination’ poses threat to rule of law, constitutional democracy: FUL
Freedom Under Law says the apparent assassination of well-known liquidator Cloete Murray and his son Thomas Murray poses a threat to the rule of law and the country’s constitutional democracy.
The father and son were ambushed by gunmen on the N1 in Midrand on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Thomas Murray died on the scene.
Cloete Murray, who worked on high-profile cases such as the controversial facilities management company Bosasa and the Guptas, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Freedom Under Law’s Johann Kriegler says the killings were meant to undermine the course of justice.
“It’s undermining the rule of law which means it is endangering our very republic. Our constitutional system depends upon the law being maintained in an orderly fashion. If murder is being used as a tool, it undermines our democracy.
“Cloete Murray’s involvement in such high-profile, politically connected matters raises serious concerns about the possibility of the killing being an assassination linked to matters investigated by him.”
Kriegler says the gunning down of people investigating high-profile criminal cases is nothing new.
“Such killings are sadly not unique. There have been others, notably the murder of Anti-Gang Unit police officer Charl Kinnear, who was investigating cases involving organised crime, the murder of Gauteng Department of Health whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, who was killed after flagging a series of suspicious and potentially fraudulent transactions.”
