City Power beefs up resources as blackouts, heavy rains continue
City Power says more resources have been deployed to several areas around Johannesburg as it battles to restore electricity amid the persistent heavy rains.
On Tuesday the city continued to receive thousands of complaints by residents who remain in the dark as a result of flooding.
On Monday, Mayor Mpho Phalatse sent a plea to Eskom, asking for it to be exempted from load shedding for at least three days to allow it to deal with the high number of power outages.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the city had received about 4800 outage calls from customers on Tuesday morning.
"Most of the calls come from Roodepoort and Hursthill areas where we had many outages over 24 hours. It's expected that rains will persist in the coming days which puts our resource under pressure. Our response time may also be affected due to flooded roads and trenches especially in Roodepoort, Lenasia, Hursthill, among others," said Mangena.
Mangena says the outages, which were caused by the impact of the recent heavy storms, are compounded by higher stages of load shedding.
"The impact of loadshedding on our infrastructure has also been huge, with the wear-and-tear increasing with every bout of rolling blackouts.
“While we anticipate more challenges with the rain pounding across our service areas, our teams including contractors who have been working hard to address most of the backlogs, are on standby in all the SDCs, ready to respond.”
