The City of Tshwane on Friday temporarily shut down the Temba Water Treatment Plant to repair a burst pipe.

The plant supplies water to Hammanskraal and surrounding areas.

Last week, the City of Tshwane and the Department of Water and Sanitation signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the metro’s water supply.

The city has been struggling for years to ensure proper water supply to residents, including those in Hammanskraal who were affected by a deadly cholera outbreak.

City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo says roaming tankers have been deployed to affected areas.

“Tshwane engineers are on site effecting the necessary repairs. It is not yet clear as to when the operations at the plant will resume. However, residents will be kept updated as and when there are new developments. Roaming tankers are continuing to supply residents with water.”

The announcement comes before Rand Water’s planned winter maintenance campaign, which is expected to start on Saturday and last until the 29th of July.
