Delay of schools reopening “a mixed bag” says Union

The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) has described the announcement on the postponement of the reopening of schools as a “mixed bag”.

On Friday, the Department of Basic Education announced that public and private schools would have to postpone reopening their doors by at least two weeks.

Naptosa Executive Director, Basil Manuel, says while the union welcomes the date of schools reopening, the union was not happy with certain aspects of the department’s pronouncements.

“So, it’s a mixed bag. We are happy with some things and some things have confused us.

“We are concerned about the confusion that came through about private schools. We must understand clearly that private school teachers and children also get infected and affected by Covid-19.

"To open the door and create an impression that some schools can continue is not acceptable. We have one system and one Minister, and we must stick to that.”

Public and private schools, which share the same calendar year will only be returning to school mid-February amid rising COVID-19 cases.

Furthermore, private schools that had reopened are expected to close yet again and return later.
