All systems go for Cosatu's May Day rally
Workers are descending on Port Elizabeth for two separate May Day rallies.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says it's all systems go for it's national May Day Rally which will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday.
Cosatu, together with its alliance partners, held a state of readiness media briefing at the ANC regional offices in Port Elizabeth this afternoon.
The federation's provincial secretary, Xolani Malamlela, says they are expecting to fill the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in New Brighton which has a capacity of 20 thousand.
Malamlela urged their members to come out in their numbers and added that they have made arrangements for Satawu members, who have been striking for more than two weeks, to be transported to the rally.
"The target at the stadium for us," explained Malamela, "is to fill the stadium into capacity."
Cosatu is meanwhile considering changing its rally route to avoid clashing with its rival trade union federation, Saftu.
Cosatu members will march from Njoli Square and they will gather at the Wolfson Stadium in New Brighton
Saftu will hold it's May Day Rally at the Lilian Ngoyi Hall.
Cosatu's rally is due to be addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cosatu President Sâdumo Dlamini, Communist Party General Secretary Blade Nzimande and SANCO President Richard Mdakane.
