12 Fort Hare students to appear in court amid violent protests
Twelve students from Fort Hare University are set to appear before the Alice Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with violent protests on campus.
The students were arrested on Sunday for causing malicious damage to property and business burglary during what is believed to have been a dispute over examinations.
“Police arrested twelve students for malicious damage to property and burglary business, after the University examination hall was slightly damaged, and its furniture was removed and torched just outside the hall,” says police spokesperson Majola Nkohli.
“It is further said that a mob then went amok and damaged several surveillance camera systems and also looted the institution's cafeteria.
“The suspects aged between 19 and 22 years old are due to appear at Alice Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Tuesday) on charges of malicious damage to property and housebreaking and theft.”
