Man (52) arrested for exam leak

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the matric exam leak in Giyani in Limpopo.

Exam papers

The suspect handed himself over to the Hawks at the Giyani Police Station this afternoon.

A Mathematics Paper 2 had been leaked with a small number of pupils having had access to the question paper before writing the exam on Monday 31 October.

The Hawks and Department of Basic Education (DBE) released a joint statement late on Tuesday, confirming the arrest.

“The speedy work of the Hawks in this case is extremely commendable and demonstrates the seriousness of this crime that seeks to undermine the integrity of an examination process that affects the lives and futures of over 700 thousand young people.”

The statement does not confirm whether the suspect is a DBE official.

The leak was detected at Giyani High School.

A Grade 12 pupil had come forward admitting to having been in possession of parts of the question paper after it was sent to him via WhatsApp.

It’s believed the sender wanted help in solving the questions.

The pupil then went on to forward the questions to those in his WhatsApp study group.

“The investigation led Hawks members to Gauteng where several people provided statements and then tracked the origin of the leak back to Limpopo,” the statement says.

The suspect faces charges including theft.

He is expected to appear in a local magistrate's court on Wednesday.

The full extent of the leak is expected to be determined by Friday.

The Department of Basic Education reiterates that only those implicated will have to rewrite the exam.

“It must be made clear that there is no need for learners to panic as it is only those who have been found with access to the paper that will have to rewrite as the initial investigation indicates that the leak was contained among a small group of learners.”

This is the second time in two years that an exam paper has been leaked in Limpopo.

Last year, the Life Sciences Paper 2 was leaked in the Vhembe District.
